Where You'll Live

Lithuania's Student Cities

Lithuania offers three main student cities, each with its own unique character and charm. Whether you prefer a cosmopolitan capital, a student-centered mid-size city, or a relaxing coastal town, Lithuania has a place for you.

Vilnius

Capital City

Lithuania's capital and largest city (population ~590,000) is a vibrant, multicultural hub and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Vilnius is home to the country's top universities, including Vilnius University (founded in 1579), VILNIUS TECH, and Mykolas Romeris University. The Old Town is one of the largest in Eastern Europe, full of cafes, galleries, and historical architecture.

Vilnius offers the most career opportunities, startup culture, and a lively international community. It's also the most connected city, with direct flights across Europe and modern infrastructure.

Kaunas

Student City

Known as Lithuania's student city, Kaunas (population ~310,000) is the second-largest city and the historical heart of the country. It's home to KTU, VMU, LSMU, and other important institutions. Kaunas was the European Capital of Culture in 2022 and has a thriving art deco architecture scene and modern creative quarter (Laisvės alėja).

Kaunas is slightly more affordable than Vilnius, with a very student-friendly atmosphere, easy walkability, and a strong sense of community. Many international students find it the perfect balance between affordability and quality of life.

Klaipėda

Coastal City

Lithuania's third-largest city (population ~155,000) sits on the Baltic Sea coast and is the country's main port city. Klaipėda University is the primary institution here, offering marine sciences and other programs. The Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is just a short ferry ride away.

Klaipėda offers a quieter, more relaxed lifestyle compared to Vilnius and Kaunas. It's ideal for students who love nature, the sea, and a slower-paced student life. Milder winters due to the sea influence are a bonus for those coming from warmer climates.

Taste Lithuania

Food & Dining Culture

Lithuanian cuisine is hearty, flavorful, and deeply rooted in tradition. Expect plenty of potatoes, dark rye bread, dairy products, and warming soups — perfect fuel for cold winter days.

Traditional Dishes

Lithuania's national dish is Cepelinai — large potato dumplings stuffed with meat, mushrooms, or cheese, served with sour cream and bacon bits. Other favorites include Å altibarščiai (cold beetroot soup, perfect in summer), Kibinai (crescent-shaped pastries), and Kepta duona (garlic-fried rye bread strips with cheese dip). Dark rye bread is a staple you'll find at every meal.

Student-Friendly Dining

Major supermarket chains like Maxima, Lidl, IKI, and Rimi offer affordable groceries. Most universities have on-campus canteens with subsidized meals (€2–4). During weekday lunch hours (11:00–14:00), many restaurants offer affordable business lunch menus for €5–10 including soup, main course, and a drink. Student cafes and food halls are scattered across Vilnius and Kaunas.

International Cuisine

Lithuania's cities, especially Vilnius, offer a diverse international food scene. You'll easily find Italian, Turkish, Asian, Indian, and Middle Eastern restaurants. Vilnius has a growing number of international grocery stores where you can find ingredients from around the world. Coffee culture is thriving, with cafes on nearly every corner offering excellent espresso and specialty drinks.

Halal Food in Lithuania — For Moroccan Students

While Lithuania is not a Muslim-majority country, halal food options are becoming increasingly available, particularly in Vilnius and Kaunas. You can find halal meat shops and a small but growing number of halal-friendly restaurants. Several Turkish and Middle Eastern restaurants serve halal food. International grocery stores stock halal products. Most supermarkets carry a wide selection of fresh vegetables, fruits, legumes, rice, and dairy that are naturally halal-compatible. Many Moroccan and international students also enjoy cooking their own meals, and all the ingredients to prepare traditional Moroccan dishes are available in Lithuanian supermarkets and specialty stores. The StudyLT team can help you identify halal food sources in your city upon arrival!

Getting Around

Transportation

Lithuania has a well-connected and affordable public transport system. Students enjoy some of the best transport discounts in Europe.

City Buses & Trolleybuses

All major cities have extensive bus and trolleybus networks. With an LSIC student card, you get an 80% discount on all city public transport. A regular monthly pass costs ~€29, but students pay just ~€6!

Trains & Long-Distance Buses

Lithuanian Railways (LTG Link) and bus companies connect all cities. Students get a 50% discount on intercity travel. A Vilnius-to-Kaunas train takes about 1 hour, and Vilnius-to-Klaipėda takes about 4 hours.

Cycling

Lithuania is very cycle-friendly with extensive bike paths in all major cities. Vilnius and Kaunas have affordable bike-sharing systems (CycloCity). Many students cycle year-round, except during winter months.

Ride-Sharing & Taxis

Bolt (the European Uber) is extremely popular and affordable in Lithuania. A typical city ride costs €3–7. CityBee car-sharing is also available for those who need a car occasionally.

International Travel

Vilnius Airport offers direct flights to over 60 European destinations via Ryanair, Wizz Air, and airBaltic at budget prices. Kaunas Airport also has low-cost connections. Weekend trips to other European cities are easy and affordable!

Walking

Lithuanian cities, especially Vilnius Old Town and Kaunas Laisvės alėja, are very walkable. Most students live within walking or cycling distance of their university campuses.

What to Expect

Weather & Seasons

Lithuania has a temperate continental climate with four very distinct seasons. Coming from Morocco, the weather will be a significant change — but most students quickly adapt and learn to love the seasons!

Spring

March – May
5°C to 15°C

Nature comes alive with blooming flowers and longer days. Mild and increasingly warm. Perfect for exploring parks and outdoor cafes. The transition from winter to spring is a magical time.

Summer

June – August
16°C to 25°C

The most pleasant season with very long days (up to 17 hours of daylight!). Perfect for festivals, beach trips to the Baltic coast, and exploring the countryside. Occasional warm rain showers.

Autumn

September – November
3°C to 15°C

Stunning fall colors across forests and parks. University semester begins in September. Days get shorter and cooler. Early autumn is beautiful; late autumn brings fog and first frosts.

Winter

December – February
-5°C to -15°C

Cold but beautiful! Snow-covered cities create a magical atmosphere. Short days (7 hours of daylight). Occasional cold waves can drop to -20°C. Warm clothing is essential. Christmas markets and winter activities make it special.

Packing Tip for Moroccan Students: Invest in a good winter coat, thermal layers, waterproof boots, gloves, a scarf, and a warm hat before arriving for the autumn semester. Lithuanian winters are much colder than Morocco. Quality warm clothing is also available at affordable prices in Lithuania (H&M, Reserved, Zara). Many students buy their winter wardrobe after arriving.

Peace of Mind

Safety & Security

Lithuania is one of the safest countries in the EU for international students. You can feel comfortable walking around cities day and night.

Low Crime Rate

Lithuania has a low crime rate compared to other European countries. Vilnius and Kaunas are safe cities with no dangerous neighborhoods or areas that students need to avoid. Street crime is rare, and violent crime against international students is extremely uncommon.

EU Member State

As an EU and NATO member, Lithuania operates under European law enforcement standards and data protection regulations. Emergency services are reliable and efficient. The European emergency number 112 works throughout the country.

Lithuania is completely safe from natural disasters. There are no earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanic activity, or severe flooding. The flat terrain and northern climate mean you never have to worry about extreme natural events.

Welcoming & Progressive

Lithuanian cities, especially Vilnius and Kaunas, are increasingly diverse and welcoming to international students. The younger generation is very open-minded and English-speaking. University international offices provide support and cultural integration programs.

Emergency Services

Digital Safety & Connectivity

Lithuania has one of the fastest internet speeds in Europe. Free public Wi-Fi is widely available in cities, public transport, cafes, and universities. Mobile data plans are very affordable (€5–10/month for unlimited data).

Beyond the Classroom

Entertainment & Social Life

Lithuania offers a rich and varied social life for students. From cultural events and music festivals to sports and nightlife, you'll never be bored.

Lithuania hosts numerous festivals throughout the year: music festivals in summer, Christmas markets in winter, film festivals, food festivals, and cultural celebrations. Student organizations regularly organize parties, international evenings, and cultural exchange events where you can meet students from all over the world.

The Baltic states (Latvia and Estonia) are easily accessible by bus. Poland is just a short drive or bus ride away. Many students visit 5–10 European countries during their studies!
